Fullmetal Alchemist

Fullmetal Alchemist is a manga and anime series created by Hiromu Arakawa.  It tells the story of the Elric brothers, who are both alchemists.  When they try to create a body for their dead mother (something that is forbidden), they pay hefty prices.  Ed, the older brother, loses his left leg.  Al, the younger one, loses his entire body.  Ed is able to bind his brother's soul to a suit of armor so he would not lose him completely but also loses his right arm in the process.

After Ed joins the state military (courtesy of Colonel Roy Mustang), the two of them go in search of the Philosopher's Stone, an item that may have the power to restore their bodies.

The artwork for both the manga and anime are quite good.  I haven't seen much of this show but I definitely liked what I saw.  There are a number of ways to enjoy Fullmetal Alchemist.  The original manga (and some novels) are available from Viz Media.  The original anime adaptation, which includes a movie, is available from Funimation.  A brand-new anime series (which I assume is a remake or reboot) will start airing in Japan this spring.
